Indian Defence Technology NEWS 2024
India is considering the use of indigenous engines for its Arjun MK-1A tanks as there's a potential four-year delay in the delivery of German engines intended for the tanks.

According to defense sources, German engine manufacturers have conveyed that they need approximately 48 months to resume the production of engines for the Arjun MK-1A tanks, intended for deployment in the desert sector by the Indian Army.
In response to this delay, relevant agencies are now exploring the possibility of developing an indigenous engine during this extended timeframe. The plan is to utilize existing engines held by development agencies to manufacture the initial tanks for the 118-tank order placed by the Defense Ministry.
In 2021, the Defense Ministry allocated ₹7,523 crore to the Heavy Vehicles Factory, Avadi, for the production of 118 locally manufactured Arjun MK-1A tanks.
Delays in the supply of engines from Germany also affected the development of a light tank, leading Larsen and Toubro and the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) to opt for an American Cummins engine.
"Indian agencies have already initiated work on creating an engine for a future main battle tank. While this engine could potentially be used for the Arjun MK-1A project, certain modifications and adjustments will be necessary," stated officials.
The Arjun MK-1A represents an upgraded version of the Arjun MK-1 main battle tank currently in service with the army. With 72 enhancements, including 14 major improvements, the upgraded tank aims to improve lethality, mobility, and survivability.
